| Gestational diabetes studies involve endocrine studies as well as pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology. Many individuals are participating in developing an effective method to study pregnancy and diabetes. In today’s society, clinics are configured to allow caregivers to provide better care for pregnant women in the treatment of gestational diabetes patients through substantially helpful topics. Studies on fetal outcome of fasting blood glucose, as well as postprandial blood glucose, particularly at 1 hour after eating, are being released showing glycemic effects. We are curious whether a strategy for blood glucose checking methods and goals for diabetes patients should be set and managed. Professor Hyuk-Sang Kwon from the the Catholic University of Korea, Korea, will be organizing these issues and present them, in addition to discussing how to apply these informations. Afterward, professor Joon-Seok Hong from Seoul National University, Korea, will present on how to identify the early stages of diabetes in pregnant women from the standpoint of a gynecologist, and on how to manage the health of the fetus. Dr. Seong-Min Han from Miz Medi Hospital, Korea, will summarize research data from studies on the controversy for using oral hypoglycemic agents on gestational diabetes patients. Finally, professor Hak Chul Jang from Seoul National University, Korea, will discuss whether the current and future status of Korean gestational diabetes research should be primarily cooperative or not. This session is expected to provide a lot of practical knowledge. |
| 임신성 당뇨병 연구회는 내분비내과뿐 아니라 소아과, 산부인과 등 많은 구성원이 참여하여 임신과 당뇨병을 효율적으로 함께 연구하고자 모임을 지속하고 있다. 이번 학회에서는 임신성 당뇨병환자를 치료 함에 있어서 실질적으로 도움이 되는 연제를 통하여 진료실에서 산모를 진료하는 참석자들에게 도움이 될 수 있도록 구성하였다. 최근 여러 연구에 의하면 공복 혈당뿐만 아니라 식후 혈당, 특히 식후 1시간 혈당 등이 태아의 outcome에 영향을 미치는 등에 관한 연구들이 나오면서 ‘과연 임신성 당뇨병환자에서 어떻게 혈당을 체크 하고, 목표치를 설정하고 관리할 것인가’에 대한 궁금증이 커져가고 있다. 가톨릭의대 권혁상 교수가 이러한 이슈를 정리하여 발표하고 우리의 현실에서 어떻게 적용할지 논의할 예정이고, 이어서 서울의대 홍준석 교수는 산부인과 의사의 견지에서 산모에서 당뇨병을 조기에 발견하여 관리하는 것이 태아 건강에 미치는 결과 등을 연결하여 발표할 예정이다. 미즈메디 병원의 한성민
선생은 아직까지 임신성 당뇨병환자에서 경구혈당강하제를 사용하는 것에 대한 논란이 많은데, 이를 발표된 연구 결과를 중심으로 정리하여 논의할 예정이며, 마지막으로 서울의대 장학철 교수는 한국의 임신성 당뇨병의 현황과 향후 어떠한 연구를 중심으로 협력 해 나가는 것이 좋을 것인가에 대한 방안을 토의할 예정으로 매우 흥미 있고, 실질적인 도움이 되는 세션이 될 것으로 기대한다.

| Chronic hyperglycemia can cause vascular cell damage and induce angiogenesis. Although chronic hyperglycemia is an important etiologic factor leading to vascular complications of diabetes, the mechanisms by which it leads to diverse cellular dysfunction is still unknown. In this session, four researchers who are actively conducting studies in this field were selected to share the latest information and their expertise. In the first lecture, Professor Akiyoshi Uemura of Kobe University, Japan, will present animal models for the study of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The second lecture will be given by Dr. Chul-Ho Lee of the Korean Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) for a blood pressure-lowering strategies targeting signaling of NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase-1. Then professor In-Kyung Jeong of Kyung Hee University, Korea, will give the following lecture on blood vessel damage factor caused by hyperglycemia and a mechanism that is balanced by the protective effects. | 만성 고혈당은 혈관세포 손상을 일으키며 세포사멸 또는 신생혈관 생성을 유발한다. 당뇨병성 미세혈관 및 대혈관 합병증 발생의 병태생리는 많은 연구를 통해 발생기전이 제시되었지만 아직 규명해야 할 부분이 많이 남아있다. 본 세션에서는 이 분야에서 활발한 연구를 하고 계시는 네 분의 연자를 초대하여 최신지견을 공유하는 자리를 만들었다. 첫 번째 강의는 Kobe University의
Akiyoshi Uemura 교수가 증식성 당뇨병성 망막병증 연구를 위한 동물모델을 소개해 줄 예정이다. 두 번째 강의는 한국생명공학 연구원 이철호 박사가 NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase-1의 활성화를 통한 혈압조절 전략에 대해서 강의해 주실 것이며, 세 번째 강의는 경희의대 정인경 교수가 고혈당에 따른 혈관의 손상 인자 및 보호 효과가 균형을 유지하는 기전에 대해서 강의해 주실 예정이다. 마지막 강의는 중앙의대 김재택 교수가 혈관과 심장에서 Akt1과 Akt2의 역할에 대해 소개해 주실 예정이다.

| Islet transplantation has been actively attempted in clinical trials as a complete recovery solution for diabetes. It has been conducted on a limited number of patients due to limited islet donors and also due to the risk of using immunosuppressants. In this symposium, under the title of ‘New Strategy of Beta-Cell Replacement Therapy’, we intended to present new attempts to overcome the limits that have been presented so far in the field of islet transplantation and beta cell differentiation from stem cells. Professor Young Ro Byun of Seoul National University, Korea, will present a new way to transplant islets through microencapsulation using PEG and gene therapy on a single cellular level. Professor Sung Hee Ihm of Hallym University, Korea, will then present the effects of GLP-1 gene expression in islet transplantation. | 췌도 이식은 당뇨병의 완치 수단으로서 임상 적용이 활발히 시도되고 있으나, 췌도의 공여자가 제한적이고 면역 억제제를 사용해야 하는 부담이 있어 제한된 환자에게만 시행되어 왔다. 본 심포지엄에서는 ‘New strategy for beta-cell replacement therapy’를 주제로 췌도 이식 및 줄기세포로부터의 베타세포 분화 연구의 영역에서 그 동안의 한계를 극복하고자 하는 새로운 시도들을 소개하고자 한다. 서울약대 변영로 교수는 single cell level의 gene therapy 및 PEG를 이용한 microencapsulation을 통한 새로운 췌도 이식 방법을 소개할 것이며, 한림의대 임성희 교수는 GLP-1 gene expression이 췌도 이식에서 이식편의 기능에 미치는 영향을 발표
할 것이다. 서울여대 김해권 교수는 amniotic mesenchymal stem cell로부터 분화된 인슐린 분비 세포를 통해 면역 억제 없이 설치류 제1형 당뇨병 모델에서 정상 혈당을 얻은 결과를 발표할 예정이다. 건국대 조쌍구 교수는 induced pleuripotent stem cell에서 분화를 유도한 베타세포를 설치류 제1형 당뇨병 모델에 이식한 결과를 발표할 예정이다.

| Genome analysis techniques using next generation sequencing and genome-wide association (GWA) studies have made great strides in the past 5 years. Using these technique, extensive research has been conducted on the genetic predisposition for diabetes. The KDA interest group on genetics organized a meeting to share the results and experiences from the recent studies by the researchers on the forefront of such advancement. The Director of Personal Genomics Institute, Bhak Jong Hwa, will give a lecture on the present and future of genome research utilizing Next Generation Sequencing. Dr. Go Min Jin from the Korean National Institute of Health will present the GWA study meta-analysis result of diabetes-related metabolic traits in Asians. Professor Lee Sang Won of Korea University will present on master AMT database approach for label-free quantitation (MAD4QUAN) and its application to uncover biomarker for diabetes. Finally, Professor Park Ji Wan from Hallym University will give a lecture on predicting diabetes using intermediate trait genetic loci. |
| 최근 5-6년간 유전체 분석 기법이 눈부신 속도로 발전함에 따라 당뇨병의 유전적 소인에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어졌다. 전장 유전체 연관성 분석(GWAS)을 통해 50여개 이상의 당뇨병 관련 유전자 변이가 규명되었으며 혈중 포도당 농도, 인슐린 농도와 관련된 유전자 변이도 다수 발견되었다. 이러한 발전은 당뇨병의 병인을 더욱 잘 이해하여 새로운 치료의 타깃을 규명하고 보다 개별화된 맞춤형 치료의 근간을 제공해 줄 것으로 기대된다. 당뇨병 유전학 연구회에서는 이러한 발전의 선두에 있는 연구자들의 최근 연구 결과와 경험을 나눌 수 있는 자리를 마련하였다. 박종화 게놈연구소 소장은 차세대 염기서열분석(Next Generation Sequencers)을
활용한 유전체 연구의 현재와 미래에 대하여 강연할 것이다. 국립보건원 고민진 박사는 아시아인에서 당뇨병과 관련된 대사 형질의 GWAS 메타 분석 결과를 발표할 것이다. 고려대학교 화학과 이상원 교수는 최신 프로테옴 분석 기법을 이용하여 당뇨병환자의 내장 지방 단백체 분석을 수행한 결과를 발표할 것이다. 마지막으로 한림대학교 의학유전학교실 박지완 교수는 대사형질과 관련된 유전자 변이를 이용한 당뇨병 예측에 대하여 강연할 것이다.

| At this International Conference on Diabetes and Metabolism, the Korea Research Society of Metabolic Syndrome set various topics related to metabolic syndrome. The first speaker, professor Sang Yong Kim, will be giving a lecture titled ‘Aberrant platelet activation in metabolic syndrome.’ Abnormal platelet function is the fundamental cause of arteriosclerosis in metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, etc. Therefore, it holds a very vital meaning in clinical studies to research what factors cause platelets to vitalize abnormally and how they affect the sclerosis of the arteries. The second speaker, Dr. Hyun-Seuk Moon from Harvard University, United States of America, will give a lecture titled ‘Role of adiponectin in colon cancer development’, which will discuss the role of adiponectin in the occurrence of colorectal cancer that has been increasing recently. Adiponectin is known as a type of adipocytokine which is related to insulin sensitivity, and interestingly, its relation to colorectal cancer has been recently emerging. With such relation, the speaker will demonstrate the mechanism-based aspect based on the experiment on animals. The third speaker will be professor Eun Jung Rhee, who will be presenting ‘Comparison of metabolic disease development according to metabolic health and obesity’. There are many seemingly healthy subjects who are not obese but can be metabolically unhealthy due to a new classification, which is highlighted in a new study based on points that have been investigated across various populations. This talk reviews the metabolic disorder classification based on level of obesity and metabolic health, and compares the occurrence of future risks. The fourth speaker, professor Soo Lim, will be presenting ‘Changes in metabolic syndrome in American and Korean youth, 1997-2008’. This lecture will present an overview of the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome in youths and will compare data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) with the U.S. NHANES. This symposium will present clinically significant results, and many people attending this symposium will reap great benefits about recent update of metabolic syndrome related studies. |
| 대사증후군 연구회에서는 이번 당뇨병학회 국제학술대회에서 대사증후군과 관련된 다채로운 주제를 정하였다. 첫 번째 연자인 김상용 교수는 ‘Aberrant platelet activation in metabolic syndrome’ 라는 제목으로 강의를 해주실 예정이다. 대사증후군과 비만, 제2형 당뇨병 등에서 비정상적인 혈소판기능은 동맥경화 발생에 근본적인 역할을 하고 있다. 따라서 어떠한 인자들에 의하여 혈소판이 비정상적으로 활성화되고 동맥경화증 발생에 어떠한 영향을 끼치는지에 대하여 알아보는 것은 매우 중요한 임상적인 의미를 갖는다고 할 수 있다. 두 번째 연자인 Harvard University의 문현석 박사는 ‘Role of adiponectin in colon cancer development’ 라는 제목으로 최근 증가하고 있는 대장암의 발생에 있어서 adiponectin의 역할에 대해 강의를 할 예정이다. Adiponectin은 인슐린 감수성과 관련된 adipocytokine의 하나로 알려져 있는데 흥미롭게도 대장암과의 관련성이 최근 대두되고 있다. 이러한 관련성을 동물실험을 바탕으로 한 기전적인 측면을 보여줄 것이다. 세 번째 연자인 이은정 교수는 ‘Comparison of metabolic disease development according to metabolic health and obesity’ 라는 제목으로 발표를 해주실 것이며, 최근 단순히 비만하거나 대사증후군이 있는 것 외에, 비만하지만 대사적으로 건강한 대상자와 비만하지 않지만 대사적으로 건강하지 않은 등, 대사적 건강과 비만도에 따른 새로운 분류로 연구가 많이 진행되는 점을 바탕으로, 본 연제에서는 비만도와 대사적 건강에 따른 분류에 따른 여러 대사 질환들의 향후 발생위험도를 비교한 재미있는 결과를 보여주실 것이다. 네 번째 연자인 임 수 교수는 ‘Changes in metabolic syndrome in American and Korean youth, 1997-2008’ 라는 제목으로 강의를 해 주실 예정이다. 최근 사회적으로 문제시 되고 있는 청소년에
서의 대사증후군 증가 양상을 우리나라 국민건강영양조사 자료와 미국 국민건강영양조사 자료를 비교하여 제시할 예정이다. 아무쪼록 흥미롭고 임상적으로 의미 있는 주제로 구성된 본 대사증후군 연구회의 심포지엄에 많이 참석하시어 좋은 결과를 공유하는 자리가 되었으면 한다.
