Several signaling pathways, like leptin and central signals, in particular, neuropeptides have been suggested to be involved in mediating nutrient-induced feeding signaling. Leptin, an adipocyte specific protein, was found to be a major regulator of appetite by a central action inhibiting food consumption. It was the first discovery of a circulating factor produced by the adipose tissue which had an important regulatory activity on target organs. Recently, adipose tissue is not an organ of energy storage and is currently a very dynamic endocrine organ. Subsequent studies have shown that the production and secretion of hormones (adipokines) by adipose tissue regulate food intake, energy metabolism, lipid and glucose metabolism in the brain, muscle, liver, and other tissues. Brown adipose tissue plays an important role in maintaining body temperature in newborn mammals including humans. Recently, brown adipose tissue is emerging as a potential target for treating human obesity. This symposium will offer an excellent opportunity for sharing ideas and for understanding recent advances of pathophysiology of obesity.

| 비만에 대한 많은 연구가 최근까지 진행되고 있다. 특히 시상하부의 많은 신경 펩타이드는 식이 섭취 및 체중 조절과 관련이 있다. 체내 지방조직의 양에 대한 신호를 뇌 시상하부에 전달해 주는 물질인 leptin이 지방세포에서 생산된다는 발견은 지금까지 가져왔던 생각, 즉 지방조직이 체내 잉여 에너지를 저장하는 단순 창고가 아니라 여러 가지 기능을 가지는 호르몬들을 적극적으로 분비하는 내분비 기관이라는 새로운 개념을 제시하였다. 이후의 연구들에서 실제 지방세포는 다양한 호르몬(adipokines)을 생산, 분비함으로써 뇌, 근육, 간을 포함한 여러조직에서 음식 섭취, 에너지 소비, 지방과 당 대사 등 우리 몸의 여러 가지 기능 조절에 적극적으로 관여함이 알려져 있다. 또한, 인간을 포함한 대부분의 포유류 신생아는 갈색지방조직을 보유하고 있는데 체온 유지에 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 하지만 최근 갈색지방조직이 인간에서의 비만 치료와 관련하여 주목을 받고 있다. 본 심포지엄은 시상하부 및 지방 조직에서 분비되는 다양한 adipokines 및 인간 갈색지방조직의 역할에 대하여 각 분야의 최고 권위자들을 모시고 비만의 최신 연구 지견을 들을 수 있는 좋은 기회라고 생각된다. |

Insulin resistance in liver, fat, or muscle tissue plays an important role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Recently, new mechanisms of insulin resistance-related has been identified, and its adjustment has been presented as new therapeutic strategies for type 2 diabetes. In this session, four distinguished researchers have been gathered in order to introduce the new signaling molecules and pathways for insulin resistance.
Professor Cheol Young Park from Sungkyunkwan University, Korea, will be lecturing on insulin resistance in the liver from the effects of the cholesterol absorption pathway (Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 [NPC1L1]), which is expressed in the intestines and the liver. Professor In Kyu Lee from Kyungpook National University, Korea, will be lecturing on the effects of PDK (pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase) activity and PDH flux in metabolic syndrome. Professor Michihiro Matsumoto from the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Japan, will be lecturing on a new hormone regulating substance CITED2 (CBP- and p300-interacting transactivator with glutamic acid- and aspartic acid-rich COOH-terminal domain 2) which is involved with abnormal gluconeogenesis in the liver of type 2 diabetes patients. Finally, professor Tsuguhito Ota from Kanazawa University, Japan, will be lecturing on the role of macrophages involved in inflammation of adipose tissue through the link between obesity and insulin resistance, as well as the chemokine system. In this session, we hope to deepen the understanding of the basic pathophysiology of insulin resistance, and aid the development of future treatments and studies for type 2 diabetes.

| 제2형 당뇨병이나 대사증후군에서 간, 지방, 근육 조직의 인슐린저항성은 중요한 병리 기전 중의 하나이다. 최근 인슐린저항성에 관련된 새로운 기전이 밝혀지면서 이를 조절하는 것이 제2형 당뇨병의 새로운 치료법의 하나로 제시되고 있다. 이 세션에서는 최근에 인슐린저항성에 대한 새로운 신호전달물질 및 체계를 보고한 4명의 훌륭한 연구자들을 모시고 이에 대해 소개하고자 한다. 성균관의대 박철영 교수는 장이나 간에서 발현되는 콜레스테롤 흡수 통로인 Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1)의 조절이 간의 인슐린저항성에 미치는 효과에 대해 강의하실 예정이며, 경북의대 이인규 교수는 대사증후군에서 PDK (pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase) 활성 및 PDH flux가 미치는 영향에 대해 강의를 하실 예정이다. 일본 National Center for Global Health and Medicine 연구소의 Michihiro Matsumoto 교수는 2012년 Nat Med 3월호에 발표한, 제2형 당뇨병환자에서 비정상적인 간의 당신생에 관여하는 CITED2 (CBP- and p300-interacting transactivator with glutamic acid- and aspartic acid-rich COOH-terminal domain 2)라는 새로운 호르몬 조절 물질에 대해 강의하실 예정이며, 마지막으로 일본 Kanazawa 대학의 Tsuguhito Ota 교수는 비만과 인슐린저항성의 연결고리로 지방세포의 염증에 관여하는 대식세포의 역할과 chemokine system에 대한 강의를 할 예정이다. 이 세션 은 제2형 당뇨병의 기본 병태생리인 인슐린저항성에 대한 심도 깊은 이해와 앞으로의 새로운 치료 및 연구에 큰 도움이 될 것으로
